About
Currently touring with an international artist, the Makarines, are making a rare stop in Santa Barbara during a break from their Los Angeles performances for an intimate, one-night-only concert experience. Performed in Spanish, their music connects with audiences beyond words, creating an unforgettable evening of flamenco music and fusion.
Makarines are a flamenco singing and multi-instrumentalist duo formed by brothers José Ibáñez (guitarist/singer) and Maka Ibáñez (cajón/singer). Raised in the rich tradition of flamenco, their sound is both traditional and modern, with beautifully layered vocals that give their music a celestial feel. Their hallmark flamenco fusion and easy-listening style defy categorization while remaining deeply rooted in the tradition of flamenco cante. Joining the brothers is Aroa Fernandez, who blends traditional flamenco with soul, electronica, and world music.
Growing up in Triana, they credit their grandfather Segundo for inspiring their love of music, singing, and harmony. Their musical education later continued night after night, singing in every corner of their neighborhood. What began as performances for fun soon evolved into a professional career, debuting at the famed flamenco tablao La Madrugá in Seville.
Since then, they have shared the stage with renowned cantaores and bailaores, including Diego Carrasco, Diego del Morao, La Tana, María Jiménez, Juan de Juan, Joaquín Grilo, and Jesús Carmona, and have also collaborated with Chiquetete and Radio Makandé.
The Makarines have appeared at major festivals, including Mont de Marsan and Cante de las Minas de La Unión, and have also performed at Teatro Alameda and Teatro Central.
In 2005, the duo recorded their self-titled album Makarines with pianist Pablo Suárez, bassist Pepe Bau, and percussionist Joaquín Migallón. Since then, they have released the albums Prefiero, Dos Manos un Pincel, and Tierra.
The Makarines first came to Santa Barbara in 2013 as cantaores with Jesús Carmona’s company for the U.S. premiere of Cuna Negra y Blanca at the Granada Theatre, attended by more than 1,000 people. In 2019, they performed as backup singers for Rosalía at the Billboard Women in Music event in Los Angeles. In 2022, the Makarines performed for the Flamenco Arts Festival’s virtual event FLAMENCO ON FILM.
