The Board of Directors and the Honorary President of the Festival, the Consul General of Spain in Los Angeles, the Honorable Jose Luis Dicenta, welcome you to Flamenco Arts Festival IV, the first and most comprehensive flamenco festival in California.   Nestled between the coastal mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the City of Santa Barbara provides a majestic backdrop for the Festival’s many events and activities in the famed downtown arts district.

During the Festival, over fifty extraordinary artists from Spain and California will thrill audiences with the centuries-old and deep-rooted cultural expressions of Andalucia, the southern region of Spain, culminating in a magnificently executed flamenco production never before seen in the United States.

“-- (Cristina Hoyos is) the essence of Iberian volatility.”

Festival IV is privileged and honored to present the legendary and internationally famous Cristina Hoyos, and her 20-member company, in the U.S. premiere of “A Tiempo y a Compás.”  Throughout her long career as a dancer, choreographer, director and actor, Cristina Hoyos has received the highest and most prestigious awards for her contributions to the art of flamenco.  In recognition of her artistic achievements, the Board of Directors take great pleasure in dedicating Festival IV to the uniquely and singularly gifted Doña Cristina Hoyos and in presenting her with the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

“-- Cristina Hoyos has devoted her life to the art form, often in the face of political repression (of the arts).”

After only three years, and with a reputation for excellence, the Festival has emerged as one of the leading Latino festivals in California, attracting thousands of people from both within and outside the state.  Festival events include: the Film Series, held at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, which has been expanded to four screenings this year and, on the 40th anniversary of the immortal Carmen Amaya’s death, we pay homage to this unique artist through a film biography of her life and work; the highly successful Concierto Para Los Niños, held at the Center Stage Theater, offers a flamenco production specially designed for children, but nevertheless enjoyed by people of all ages; and Noches Flamencas, featuring California artists, which will be one of the first productions presented at Santa Barbara’s newest performing arts venue, the Marjorie Luke Theater.

Be a part of the many Festival events and receptions, as we pay tribute to the past, enjoy the best of the present and look forward to the future of flamenco in Santa Barbara -- California’s emerging flamenco capital.
