“I will dance anywhere,” Carmen Amaya once said, “even in a street corner if I have to.” Instead she danced in the most prestigious theaters of Europe and America, won universal industry acclaim and reverence, was presented to the Queen of England and to an American President. Amaya died at the age of 50, but left a flamenco legacy of innovation that forever affected the dance form. After her death in 1963, Barcelona raised a monument to honor its favorite daughter. This film, produced and directed by Jocelyn Ajami, will be shown again on October 30.

FLAMENCO LEGENDS IN CINEMA
Queen of the Gypsies

A Film Portrait of Carmen Amaya
Thursday, October 30, 1:00 p.m., Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Mary Craig Auditorium, 1130 State Street.
Free admission, limited and no reserved seating. (English subtitles, 81 mins, 2002)

On the 40th anniversary of her death, Carmen Amaya’s legacy is as alive and vibrant today as it was during her lifetime. Amaya was born in 1913 in Barcelona to a poor gypsy family of dancers and musicians. Before she was 18, she made her professional debut at the Palace Theater in Paris. Her career from then on included spectacular tours in South America, Mexico, and the United States. This film, produced and directed by Jocelyn Ajami, provides details of her life and work, such as several Hollywood movies which recorded for all time her supreme artistic achievements. This is the same film shown on June 26.
